Hello and thank you for your question.
Working on the railway requires a variety of soft skills, most of which are covered in something called Non-technical Skills. These are skillsets that we use everyday, or most days, within our roles that generally come naturally and instinctively.
Generally speaking communication is a key asset to any role when working on the railway. As safety is an integral aspect of our working environment, we need to ensure that we communicate effectively with each other to come to a clear understanding and maintain the Be Safe principles.
Time management and workload management are also essential qualities to have. As we lead busy lives both at home and at work, we need to ensure that we prioritise what we need to achieve and maintain focus to allow us to succeed. Within our roles on the railway, we may undertake numerous tasks each day and have many plates to spin in order to fulfil our job roles successfully. Therefore, effective time management is key to maintain a busy schedule and management of workload is fundamental to avoid burnout and overload.
