Additional information

I am a keen train enthusiast who has completed the CIRO's Introduction to Rail course and plan to undertake more of their courses. I have been interested in becoming a train driver for a very long time and really love GWR's HSTs.

Hi William,

Trainee train driver recruitment is typically driven by business requirements and unfortunately we can't currently advise when any opportunities will arise in Oxford. When they do however, they will be advertised on the FirstGroup careers site. The site also has a job alert facility so I would suggest registering for these to ensure you are notified as soon as a role is advertised that matches your set criteria.

Hi Alex,

Thank you for letting me know. I am interested in the Trainee Train Driver role currently advertised in Reading but unfortunately live more than 60 minutes from it (according to the AA's route planner).

On another note, I keep on being unsuccessful at GWR's online test for their front line, customer facing, station-based roles (standard/enhanced eArcu Customer Service SJT). I am applying for these positions as I would really love to work in a station environment whilst waiting for a Trainee Train Driver role in Oxford to be advertised. Are you able to advise me on how I can pass it?

Hi William,

Unfortunately, the maximum 60-minute travel time is a mandatory requirement so if you weren't able to meet this then relocation would be your only option. Opportunities do come up in Oxford however, so I would expect to see something in the future - we just couldn't give any real indication as to when.

If you do a Google search, I believe there are practice tests available online, which should help with familiarising yourself with the testing style. In terms of the test(s) you complete with us, the key competencies being assessed are as follows:

  • Collaboration
  • Customer Service
  • Performing Effectively
  • Performing Safely

Therefore, I would suggest considering these things when selecting your answers. It may also be worth you reviewing our company values as this may help you to understand what our priorities are and thus what weighting the different answers in the tests may hold. However, it's generally not advised to think over your answers for too long, as your first thought is often the most appropriate response.

I hope that offers some help.

Thank you for your advice, Alex. I will try some practice tests and read about GWR’s company values before a similar role is advertised.
