Improvement in SJT for Train Drivers?
Additional information
Hi all, I have recently applied for a trainee train driver position and thought I did quite well in the tests. I scored in the 99th percentile for error checking but only 45th for the SJT. Are there any tips or tricks to maximise score on this test? I'm autistic which I don't think helps. KR, Sean

Hi Sean,
If you do a Google search, I believe there are practice tests available online, which should help with familiarising yourself with the testing style. In terms of the test you complete with us, the key competencies being assessed are as follows:
- Collaboration
- Engagement
- Effectiveness
- Safety
Therefore, I would suggest considering these things when selecting your answers. However, it's generally not advised to think over your answers for too long, as your first thought is often the most appropriate response.
I hope that helps.

Hi Alex,
Thank you, I will have a look for some online.
I felt during the SJT I completed that the scenarios generally asked you to prioritise between differing competencies in your list, most notably effectiveness and safety. Is there anyway to know what the correct answer would look like without prior knowledge of the SOPs in place?
As examples there were questions around driving an unfamiliar route, should you cancel the train (I.e. be ineffective) or drive the route (I.e. be unsafe). You spot a safety issue on the platform, do you delay your train to report it, or just leave it to potentially cause a customer harm? I would imagine there are procedures and protocols in place for scenarios like these so my only instinct would be to follow that, but it isn't a valid answer for the test. Is there any guidance for potential trainee train drivers to be able to improve on questions like this?
Many thanks,
Sean

Naturally, I can't give you too much information so as not to give you the preferred responses we're looking for, however I will stress that safety is of paramount importance - "Dedicated to safety" is one of our company values.
Please also take the time to review the Trainee Train Driver Role Profile as this may also help.
